Drypoint

For class we were given one of the Deadly Sins, I received Envy, obviously. We weren't supposed to do anything too cliche, but that's about all I could come up with.... image wise.

I was mostly thinking about (fyi: I'm a Tolkien Geek) Melkor/Morgoth and his jealousy of creation, of how he wants to create and control other's wills like Eru (God). He likes to call his creations purely his own, instead of being revealed to him, or owned by Eru. Melkor basically breaks away from Eru, ala Fallen Angel path. Melkor's creations are made in mockery of all of the other Ainur creations, which is a basis for Tolkien's evil. Melkor is eventually shown his true colors when Feanor (an elf, just think if it was a mere man) creates the Silmarils. The Silmarils are three jewels that gave off light that was captured from the two trees who gave light to the world before the sun and the moon where in the sky. Morgoth in his rage steals the jewels destroys the two kinds of trees. Feanor and his people vow to get the jewels back, at no cost... and the story weaves in and out of multiple stories...

Me, being all for the cliche, chose the moment with the jewels where Melkor is pushed over the edge.

*push*

oh, I was looking at some Rembrandt's drypoints for inspiration. I wanted to do some major dark/light contrasts like he had done. The spider-like line from the drypoint worked wonderfully with the 'effect' of bright light shining.

- side story B: My acentate layout sheet was crinkly in areas and I went ahead and printed anyways. I ended up putting a huge bend in my plate! Anyways, I got the plate mostly flattened now, it just will never lay flat again. poor thing.

Really amazing and quite scary in a way (imagine being caught up in admiring something you'd worked on and there is someone sneaking up with ill intent - yikes!) You did the art class challenge and that scene justice I think.

The lighting is absolutely amazing. And Morgoth in the background looks very much like how he probably did then.

I love it! However in the background I just now realized that there was a hand that is outstreched reaching for the person who had the gold. You can define that a little more if you have time but otherwise I love the idea :) Great job.

Hope you drop by my gallery sometime :)
